CV football stadium gets new look

Work has started on replacing the grandstand at the Crescent Valley High School football stadium. The new facility should be finished by late August, well before the Raiders’ first home game against Woodburn on Sept. 18.

A local company, T Gerding Construction Co., was awarded the contract to construct the new grandstand utilizing aluminum bleachers from Reser Stadium donated by the Oregon State University Athletic Department. The new facility will seat 1,500 people and is being built on the opposite, west side of the football field from where the old bleachers were located.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $425,000 and will be paid for out of bond monies that remain from the 2002 bond measure and that must be used on capital improvements, according to facilities manager Greg Lecuyer.
Lecuyer noted that the district was able to save nearly $100,000 from the amount bid on new construction for the bleacher replacement by using the recycled OSU bleachers. The current press box also will be reused.

A structural engineering review of the stadium’s bleachers last August revealed that many of the wooden seats and floorboards were decayed and that the scaffolding support system did not meet current codes. Use of the bleachers during the 2008 football season was restricted and the school board voted in October, 2008 to replace them.

The design of the new facility allows for the addition of a roof in the future. It also seats both home and visiting fans on the same side; the old bleachers will be completely removed.
