The Philosophy of Physics and Roller Coasters

This physics program is designed specifically for 7th through 9th grade physical science students but can be easily adapted for other levels. Meeting for 90 minutes once a week for 14 sessions provides ample time for students to design, explore, problem solve, analyze, and discuss their experiences. This time allotment helps foster teaching the nature of science, inquiry, engineering, mathematics and physics.

A strength of this program is that the three workbooks and the Teacher’s Guide provide all of the necessary material to understand the required physics, mathematics and problem solving. Referring to other sources will broaden one’s understanding of the material, but this is not necessary for teaching a rewarding course for the teachers, students, and parents.

A main goal of this course is to serve as an extension for any physical science program. Most physics courses start out with high-level algebra and vectors which tends to scare away budding scientists. This course introduces physics using simple linear equations with variable that can be manipulated using simple algebraic steps learned in middle school algebra and pre-algebra classes.

It is important for science educators to keep in mind to always encourage girls and boys of all ages to continue their success in science. This course does not discriminate against abilities. Students of all learning ranges can find success in this program. We have found that motivation to learn is the primary skill needed for success in this program. Physics and Roller Coasters provides a fun, engaging environment in which students (and teachers) learn about physics and the nature of science.
