School Philosophy:

We educate our children in a friendly and inviting school climate. Our primary focus is on teaching and learning; improving our students' skills and knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Wilson Core Values:

Meaningful Learning for All

Wilson School is in the fourth year of implementing and developing the Core Knowledge curriculum.  The philosophical bases of Core Knowledge is that students must have a foundation of essential "core" knowledge in order to successfully acquire and apply skills.  Knowledge builds upon knowledge.  Knowledge gained in early years provides the foundation for further learning.  The Core Knowledge curriculum is engaging, stimulating, and it builds the confidence that students need for academic mastery.  It provides the foundation and skills for in-depth study in later years.

Collaborative and Innovative Culture

The Wilson Site Council, comprised of parents and Wilson staff members, has developed the following goals with a focus on continuous improvement and high standards:

  1. Teach and improve student reading skills, K-5.

  2. Teach and improve student knowledge and skill in mathematics, K-5.

  3. Implement and develop the Core Knowledge curriculum.

  4. Increase students' opportunities for success by creating a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment.

Safe Learning Environment

Student safety and security is at the top of our daily agenda.  Children enjoy two outside breaks during the day and an additional recess after lunch.  Trained professional staff supervise and teach children to be responsible, respectful, safe, honest, and kind citizens.  Children have access to a large assortment of recreation equipment with acres of field space to run and play, to include Wildcat Park, the coolest and largest playground structure in the entire city!

Music, Physical Education

Students receive both music and PE instruction twice each week from our music and PE specialists. In music, students learn and use the elements of music and begin to understand ways we communicate through the arts. When it is appropriate, the music instruction is integrated with units or activities in the regular classroom. In physical education, students practice fun ways to improve fitness, work together, and move efficiently. Older students practice basic skills for lifetime activities, such as team and individual sports, rhythmic activities, and alternative sports. The older students also learn to measure their own flexibility, strength, and endurance and to set goals and assess their progress on those goals.

Parent and Community Support

Wilson parents are committed to providing a quality educational experience for their children. Parents in our school community were primarily responsible for the building of Wildcat Park. Currently, we have three parent members on our School Council. The Wilson PTA sponsors fund raising events and provides for a number of school needs: education assemblies; computers, monitors, and printers; and equipment and supplies for classroom teachers. Several years ago, two parents organized a Volunteer Center to provide teachers with assistance on a wide variety of projects and routine work. Each year, parents and other community volunteers spend thousands of hours helping out in classrooms, working in the library, and assisting us with our technology needs.

Fifth Grade Field Trip:

The final year that students are at Wilson, they raise all the funds necessary for a week-long field trip to Fort Vancouver, Fort Clatsop, Fort Stevens and the northern Oregon coast, where they learn more about the early exploration and settling of the Pacific Northwest.  It is the culminating activity of their year-long studies in social studies that focuses on the Pacific Northwest and the Lewis and Clark Trail..
