Superintendent’s Education Update: Dual Language Spanish English Language Arts Curriculum Adoption

The current dual language Spanish and English Language Arts curriculum (EngageNY) was adopted in 2014.  Corvallis School District translators have spent countless hours translating materials, and our teachers have worked hard to adapt and adjust the materials to meet the linguistic needs of students at Lincoln and Garfield Elementary Schools.  Since 2014, new core language arts materials designed for dual language programs have become available.  Our vision for the adoption of new Spanish and English Language Arts curriculum is to have a comprehensive reading curriculum that offers an articulated scope and sequence, supports strong differentiated instruction, and enables all students to master rigorous learning goals.

Recently, teachers at Garfield and Lincoln participated in a review of the new curriculum options.  A selection of three curricula were narrowed to one, which is currently under review for adoption.

Benchmark Adelante/Benchmark Advanced are comprehensive K-6 Spanish and English Language Arts/ English Language Development programs designed to reach all learners.  A wealth of research-based print and digital resources provide support for building strong literacy foundations, accessing complex texts, engaging in collaborative conversations, and writing to sources.

This curriculum includes rigorous and integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction.  It meets the needs of our District as we continue to implement a balanced approach, and enables all students to master rigorous learning goals with the support of strong differentiated instruction and responsive teaching based upon ongoing assessments.  The five themes of this curriculum include:

  • Building Content Knowledge
  • Meaning Making
  • Effective Expression
  • Foundational Skills
  • Language Development
