Youth Art Month: A Look Inside the Lincoln Art Room

For Youth Art Month, we are highlighting projects happening across the district. In Dana Monroe’s art room at Lincoln Elementary, students are currently focusing on creating art that explains who they are.

4th Grade Identity Sculptures

Our 4th graders are moving from 2D drawing to 3D form. To start their new sculpture project, students created mind maps to answer the question: “What things represent me?” Right now, they are sketching out large bubble letters, focusing on how to make them look thick and solid (length, width, and height). Once their letters are ready, they will fill them with the symbols from their mind maps to create a detailed sculpture that tells their story.

5th Grade Cubist Portraits

The 5th graders are currently in the middle of their clay Cubist self-portraits. The classroom is a busy mix of different stages right now. Some students are still sculpting their faces, carefully scratching and scoring the clay to make sure everything stays attached with a bit of water. Other students have already moved on to the glazing stage, picking out specific colors that they feel best represent their personalities. Once the glazing is finished, the pieces go into the kiln for the final firing, turning them into permanent ceramic art.
