School Board Recognition
January is School Board Recognition Month. Our school board members spend hundreds of hours of unpaid time working to make sure that we are providing the best possible education for students in our district and they serve as the corporate board of directors for one of our community’s largest employers. While we are celebrating school board members this month, we recognize that their contributions reflect a year-round effort. They are dedicated individuals who are committed to improving student achievement and to fighting for the best for all of our students.

OSAA Change Based on Corvallis School District Feedback
Several years ago, during a DELTA meeting, a student member shared how important it is for staff to be able to pronounce student names. When staff members are unable to pronounce a student’s name it often leads to the student feeling less connected and also leads to staff feeling less confident and comfortable greeting students or calling on students in class by name. This is an area of focus in our district.
I have noticed the same pattern holding true during athletic events. After a discussion with Mark Henderson, CV Athletic Director, we took this issue to the Oregon School Activities Association. In response, OSAA has added a roster pronunciation guide on team roster pages. Athletic directors and coaches can now add proper pronunciation into the roster guide and public address announcers can use this feature during competitions. I am proud of how our equity work is having an impact beyond our district.
Student Project Highlight - Water Filling Station at CHS
Our facilities staff recently installed a water bottle filling station at CHS due to the fundraising efforts of CHS 10th grade student Taylor Young. Last year Taylor raised money to buy an Elkay Water Bottle filling station for the school. She shared that her goal was to help limit the amount of plastic waste generated at the school. We appreciate Taylor’s work. This is another example of our students demonstrating how to create a more sustainable future for all of us.
