2018-19 High School Calendar and Instructional Schedule Available

Instructional Schedule change coming next fall

Both high schools will transition from a 7-period schedule to an 8-period schedule starting next September. The change to an 8-period schedule will provide a regular daily schedule of 8:00 am to 3:05 pm for both high schools and will equalize the ODD/EVEN day rotating block schedule.

A team of school staff and district administrators spent the last several months researching and evaluating parent input from last year and student data related to the high school instructional schedule. Our goal is to increase student flexibility for additional academic opportunities and to foster an improved school climate that allows students equitable access to teachers and elective classes. The 2018-19 calendar and instructional schedule has been finalized and is now available.

How will this schedule change impact students?

  • Freshman Success, a yearlong freshman class coupled with freshman health will be required for all incoming freshmen. This class will give new high school students a strong foundation for their high school career and will also include a mental health focus.
  • Most sophomores through seniors will register for seven classes, and will have an open period. All will be able to choose an 8th class from a select group of courses outlined by each school, such as credit recovery, intervention services, and teacher assistant/peer tutor.
  • Students taking classes at LBCC/OSU will continue to have that option. We will do our best to give matching off-blocks (1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, etc) during times when students are taking an off-site class.
  • In the event of weather closure days, the scheduling between ODD/EVEN days will more easily be balanced.

Implementation of this change will primarily be funded by the High School Success grant (Measure 98). We believe that this will result in greater success for our incoming freshmen, a decrease in failure rates in core classes, and an increase in opportunities for active and engaged learning for all students.
