The Corvallis School District joins the other 196 school districts throughout Oregon to celebrate January as “School Board Recognition Month,” Superintendent Ryan Noss announced at last night’s school board meeting.
“Our school board members spend countless hours of unpaid time working to provide the best possible education for our students,” said district Superintendent Noss. “They also serve as the corporate board of directors for one of our community’s largest employers. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for all they do.”
School board members represent their fellow citizens’ views and priorities in maintaining and running the Corvallis School District. They also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, an important and highly valued aspect of education in Oregon.
The primary role of the school board is to establish policies that give the district direction to set priorities and achieve its goals. This is accomplished in partnership with the superintendent by implementing policies and programs to meet the learning needs of all students.
To achieve this, the board focuses on the following:
- Operates as representatives and makes decisions in the best interest of the whole District
- Works with the Superintendent to set the long-term direction of the District through the mission, vision, goals, and priorities.
- Focuses on policymaking and planning.
- Is accountable for the financial stewardship of the District, including aligning resources with goals and priorities, setting expectations, and monitoring progress.
In recognition of their service, members from the Corvallis School District Camerata orchestra attended the board meeting and played two different pieces; “Mundial” by Abe Tsai (a current Camerata Orchestra member and Crescent Valley student) and “The Holberg Suite Movement 1 and 3” by Edarg Grieg. This is a combined orchestra from Corvallis and Crescent Valley High Schools.
“Even though we are making a special effort during January to show appreciation for our school board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a year-round effort on their part. They are dedicated individuals committed to improving student achievement and fighting for the best for all our students,” Noss said.
