CTE Month Highlight: Automotive Program and Metals 2 at Corvallis High School

As we enter the final week of Career and Technical Education Month, our first highlight is our Automotive Program and our Metals 2 class at Corvallis High School. Students are currently working on a project to create tape dispensers from scratch. Before entering the shop, teacher JJ Keim gives the class instructions and safety reminders.

Technical Preparation

To guide their work, students must use math to determine feed rates and RPMs. This helps them know exactly how quickly to feed the metal through the machines. They also discuss the most accurate ways to measure for cuts and learn how to tell if their technique is correct by looking at the metal’s finish after it has been cut.

Hands-on Production

Safety is the priority once the students are in the shop, and everyone works on their own project at different stages. Right now, some students are cutting or drilling the main section of their tape dispenser at the vertical mill, while others are at the lathe working on connecting cylinders. Students also have to change out their own tools as they move between tasks. Some tools in the shop aren’t for cutting at all, but for precision, like an edge finder used to find a reference point. Each piece has to be exact so it fits seamlessly with the other parts they have made.

Career Readiness

For students planning to enter the auto industry, this class provides a solid foundation in fabrication. Understanding these measurements is important for engines to work properly. Building something that requires this level of accuracy also helps students develop the skills needed to diagnose and fix automotive problems later on. Many of the students are still exploring their options, but know they want a job that includes hands-on work. Mr. Keim stays in touch with what industry leaders are looking for, helping him connect his students with high-demand, high-paying jobs in the field.
