The five finalist candidates for the interim board member selection process attended the January 16 school board meeting to participate in the public selection process and a round of questions and answers.
School Board chair Sami Al-AbdRabbuh thanked all applicants and noted his appreciation of their willingness to serve. All applicants had an opportunity to provide a five-minute statement and the top two were selected for a round of questions from school board members. After nearly an hour of discussion and deliberation, the board voted unanimously to select Luhui Whitebear for the position. Director Whitebear’s term is from January 16, 2020, through June 30, 2021.
Chair Al-AbdRabbuh noted that while all of the applicants would bring strong skills and qualities to the board, Whitebear will bring an important perspective to the board that supports the board’s commitment to equity.
According to Ms. Whitebear, “There is still a lot of work to do in the local schools related to equity, diversity, bullying, and homelessness. I view myself as an advocate for positive social change and being a member of the board will allow me to help children and families in our community.”
Welcome to our newest school board member!
