New Special Education Assistant Coordinator Announced

Earlier this spring, special education staff had an opportunity to provide input on the most important qualities for a special education administrator to support the needs of students and staff. The Corvallis School District is pleased to announce Shawn Bernard has been hired for the position of Assistant Special Education Coordinator and will provide day-to-day special education support to staff and families. He will begin in this role effective July 1, 2021.

Shawn will be relocating to Corvallis this summer from Anchorage, Alaska with his husband Edmar and his pig Titus. Shawn currently serves as the Assistant Director of Secondary Special Education in the Anchorage School District. For the past seven years, he has worked in elementary and secondary special education at the Anchorage School District. He also has been active at the state level, serving as president of the Alaska Council of Administrators of Special Education and as a committee member of the Alaska Teacher and Educator Advisory Council. He is a passionate and dedicated advocate for inclusive learning environments that are culturally relevant.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Special Education from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and a Masters of Education and Administrator Credential from the University of Alaska, Southeast, in Juneau, Alaska.

Shawn had the opportunity to interview with multiple teams and he consistently demonstrated his dedication and thoughtfulness as well as his strong communication skills. We are excited to have someone with so much experience and passion in special education join our team and support the work that we are doing. Welcome Shawn!
