Public Health Notification- Meningococcal Disease

UPDATE:  January 19, 2018

According to News Released by Benton County, laboratory test results show that the Linus Pauling student was infected with serogroup C meningococcal disease. This means that the timing of this case is coincidental with, but unrelated to, the outbreak at Oregon State University. The Linus Pauling student has been discharged from the hospital.

Public health officials strongly encourage quadrivalent meningococcal vaccination for all adolescents and young adults.

January 17, 2018

On Sunday, January 14, 2018, a Linus Pauling student was hospitalized with a confirmed case of meningococcal disease. As of this morning, the student is recovering.  Local health officials are investigating this case thoroughly with the support of the Corvallis School District and state health officials.

The Benton County Health Department is working with medical providers, family, and the school district to identify anyone who may have had enough close exposure to need preventive treatment. Public health investigators are contacting any families that may be at risk. If you have not been contacted, then health officials don’t believe you are at risk.
