Mensaje de seguridad del Superintendente
As Superintendent of the Corvallis School District, I feel deeply responsible for the safety of every student, staff member, and visitor to our schools. In response to news of a recent safety threat at Corvallis High School, we received feedback from parents about how district communications around the incident were managed. Thank you to those who contacted us; your input is essential as we continue to refine how we share information with students and parents in a way that is helpful yet does not create a greater sense of alarm or hinder an active investigation.
As a parent, I sympathize with the heightened fears about school safety. Each time a police car is seen at a school, or a concerning threat is shared via social media, it is instinctive for parents to want confirmation regarding whether or not their student’s safety is at risk. Unfortunately, there are times when the district is not at liberty to share specific information about a threat, due to an ongoing investigation or to protect student confidentiality; the situation at CHS was an example of that conundrum. I want to reassure you that we take all threats seriously; in the event of a safety concern or threat, our district follows a threat assessment process including a prompt and thorough investigation in partnership with local law enforcement, and we implement enhanced security measures as needed.
We advocate a safety mindset and encourage students to observe what is happening around them and report concerns to a trusted adult or school administrator. Students may also report concerns through SafeOregon, a 24/7 confidential tip line, either via email at [email protected], or by phone or text at 844-472-3367. Thank you for entrusting your students to the Corvallis School District and for all you do to help keep our schools safe and welcoming.
