School Board Votes in Support of Recommendation to Postpone Standardized Tests Until 21-22 School Year

Smarter Balanced and OSAS Assessments

This is typically the time of year that Corvallis School District students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 take standardized, statewide assessments such as Smarter Balanced and the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS). Our district is committed to providing exceptional academic instruction and recommended to the school board using the remaining in-class instruction time to focus on teaching in place of using instructional time for standardized tests this spring. This recommendation was informed by families with students in grades 3-8 and 11 polled last week.

More than 75% of the 1,322 respondents indicated strong support for postponing the assessments until next year. The school board unanimously approved the recommendation. While standardized tests will not be offered this spring, teachers will continue to use other tools to assess student strengths and areas of improvement as we complete this school year.

Superintendent Noss noted that if parents/guardians wish to have their child participate in standardized testing this spring, school staff will work with the family to honor that request.
